A galamsey, derived from the phrase "gather them and sell", is a local Ghanaian term which means illegal small-scale gold mining in Ghana.
Galamseyers are people who perform illegal gold mining independent of big companies, digging small working pits, tunnels, and sluices by hand.
With the exception of a few steam shovels used to make the initial ground breaking and a jackhammer here and there, most of the mining is done the old-fashioned way with picks and shovels.
